What Are Uncommon Pregnancy Symptoms I Should Know About?

When most people think about early pregnancy symptoms, they think about a missed period, nausea, fatigue, or tender breasts. But pregnancy can cause other changes that you may not immediately associate with being pregnant.

Some less commonly discussed pregnancy symptoms include a metallic taste, increased saliva, nasal congestion, vivid dreams, dizziness, changes in smell, headaches, and changes in digestion.

Every pregnancy is different, and having or not having certain symptoms does not necessarily tell you whether you are pregnant.

What Are Some Unusual Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

While symptoms vary from person to person, some women experience changes they weren't expecting.

Metallic Taste

Some women notice a strange metallic or bitter taste in their mouth during early pregnancy. Hormonal changes may affect your sense of taste and make foods taste different than usual.

Increased Sense of Smell

Scents you barely noticed before may suddenly seem much stronger. Foods, perfumes, coffee, or household products may even trigger nausea.

Increased Saliva

Some women experience more saliva than usual during pregnancy. This can sometimes occur alongside nausea or morning sickness.

Nasal Congestion

Hormonal changes and increased blood flow can cause the tissues inside your nose to swell, leaving you feeling congested even when you aren't sick.

Vivid Dreams

Pregnancy can affect sleep, emotions, and dreams. Some women report unusually vivid or memorable dreams during pregnancy.

Dizziness or Feeling Lightheaded

Changes occurring in your body during pregnancy can sometimes leave you feeling dizzy or lightheaded.

Headaches

Hormonal changes, fatigue, stress, dehydration, and other factors may contribute to headaches during pregnancy.

Bloating and Digestive Changes

Hormonal changes can affect digestion, which means bloating, constipation, or increased gas may occur even during early pregnancy.

Can You Be Pregnant Without Typical Pregnancy Symptoms?

Yes. Some women experience several symptoms very early, while others experience few or no noticeable symptoms. Symptoms alone cannot confirm a pregnancy. If your period is late or you think you could be pregnant, taking a pregnancy test can provide more information.

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

Home pregnancy tests are generally most reliable after a missed period. Testing too early can sometimes produce a negative result even when pregnancy has occurred because there may not yet be enough hCG for the test to detect.

If your result is negative but your period still hasn't arrived, consider testing again after a few days.

When Should Pregnancy Symptoms Be Evaluated?

Many physical changes can occur during pregnancy, but certain symptoms deserve prompt medical attention.

Seek medical care for symptoms such as severe abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, severe dizziness, or other symptoms that concern you.
