Sick and Exhausted? Here’s How to Know if It’s the Flu or Pregnancy

When the weather cools it’s easy to mistake early pregnancy symptoms for a seasonal cold or flu. Fatigue, nausea, body aches and even a late period can feel confusing this time of year. If you’re not sure what your body is trying to tell you, you are not alone.

Here are a few ways to sort through what you’re feeling:

Common Flu or Cold Symptoms

  • Fever or chills

  • Cough or sore throat

  • Stuffy or runny nose

  • Body aches that improve after rest

  • Symptoms that come on suddenly

These are usually signs your body is fighting an illness. Rest, fluids and over-the-counter medicine can help most people bounce back in a few days.

Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms

  • Missed period

  • Nausea or vomiting (morning sickness can happen any time of day)

  • Tender or swollen breasts

  • Increased fatigue, even with rest

  • Needing to urinate more often

While some overlap with flu symptoms, pregnancy symptoms usually last longer and don’t improve with rest or medicine.

What To Do if You’re Unsure

  1. Take your temperature. A fever usually points to illness, not pregnancy.

  2. Notice timing. Did your symptoms begin around the time you expected your period? That could be an early sign of pregnancy.

  3. Get clarity. The only way to know for sure is with a pregnancy test and, if positive, an ultrasound.
