Open Adoption
Open adoption is the most flexible type of adoption and the most popular type. With this adoption, the birth mother gets to meet with the adoptive family before the child is born.
The adoptive family and birth mother decide on what type of relationship they want and how all communication and visits are done. They will exchange identifying information like full names, addresses, and phone numbers.
Closed Adoption
If you desire more privacy and confidentiality regarding your adoption, closed adoption is a great fit. Some mothers need this type of adoption for safety concerns or if they desire to move on.
With a closed adoption, all identifying information is concealed, and an adoption agency would choose a family based on the birth mother’s desires.
Semi-Open Adoption
Lastly, there’s an option in between. Though uncommon, some women choose semi-open adoption. This type of adoption allows contact between the adoptive family and the birth mother, but it’s all done through an adoption agency or third party. It’s a bit more private than an open adoption, as all identifying information is concealed.
