Come Help the Poor….

It’s as old as the hills and as new as a baby.

As long as mankind has roamed this earth, the quest for excellence has existed.  We all know of people in our circles of influence that have dedicated their lives to exactly that:  being the best.  Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what drives them in continuous self-improvement, but they seem to be nearly addicted to it.  Sometimes, they are driven by personal gain (like money, prestige, power), sometimes they are driven by internal conviction (normally a set of morals referred to as a work ethic or a religious conviction), and sometimes they are simply driven by fear.

Whatever compels it, that search for excellence has brought us great minds like Aristotle, great inventors like Edison, and great humanitarians like Mother Theresa.

Our feeble minds can scarcely envision a world without this drive and ambition.

While we are not Aristotle, Edison, or Theresa, we strive for excellence at PDHC in our own way, too.  We measure ourselves by the number of lives saved, the number of souls touched, and the number behaviors changed for the better.

I met Mother Theresa a few years ago and got the chance to spend an hour or so with her in a small room with three other people at a convent in Washington DC.  I would imagine that she said a lot of very memorable things to me that day, but I can only remember one.  More than a few times, she repeated the same thing and I remember it like it was yesterday.

She said, very simply, but very sincerely:  “Come to Calcutta.  Come help the poor.”

You know what?  At the time, I had five children (all under the age of 15) and I actually considered dropping everything and flying off to Calcutta with this frail little woman to minister to the poorest of the poor.  Unbelievable.

But as I have reflected on her invitation over the years, I have come to realize that we will be given that for which we ask.  God will provide.  He will touch the hearts of those we ask, if we have faith.  Mother Theresa knew that.  As the years have passed, I have come to know that, too.

As we strive to save 1,000 lives in 2012, as we evaluate everything we do to get to that goal, as we reach for the humble excellence that will not be rewarded in this life, we need your help.

Our prayer is that God blesses us with more volunteers.  We pray that He expands our outreach.  We pray that He adds financial supporters.

So, let me plead.

Come help the dear souls who seek us out.  Come help the poor.
